PeaceKeeping Operations

A peacekeeping operation is led by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), and works to create the conditions for lasting peace in a country torn by conflict.

Currently there are 16 peacekeeping operations in the world. Here are some examples per continent:

·         Operations in Africa
United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI)
Problem: Civil war in Cote d’Ivoire

          Operation in America
United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)
Problem: 2004 Haiti rebellion

United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)
Problem: War in Afghanistan                                                                       


·          Operations in The Middle East
United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO)
Problem: (Monitors the various ceasefires and assists UNDOF and UNFIL)

United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK)
Problem: Kosovo War
